Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
